Large Yellow Underwing

Two nights ago I used a blacklight and sheet to lure moths for the first time. The highlight was this Large Yellow Underwing (Noctua pronuba), which showed up around midnight. This species was introduced from Europe in 1979 and has since spread throughout the continent.

This view shows the forewing markings a little better. I had a brief glimpse of the hindwings – yellow-orange with black bands. Unfortunately the glimpse was not long enough to photograph them.

I recorded some other moths that night, and I will post them as I get them identified.
